Review of the cartoon "Your name"

A stunningly beautiful and very touching Japanese cartoon about teenagers who begin to change bodies.

High school student Mitsukha studies in a small town school in the center of Japan and dreams about how she will move to Tokyo after the graduation and will heal the metropolitan life. Suddenly she begins to change bodies regularly with the Tokyo high school student Taki. A wonderful exchange happens in a dream and lasts the whole day. At first, the guys think that they dream of a strange life. When they are convinced that they are really spending time in other people's bodies, they are trying to improve each other's lives. Mitsukha organizes for Taki a date with a girl whom the guy is afraid to approach, and Taki makes Mitsuhu more popular among classmates. And this is only the beginning of their adventures ...

The cartoon was in the category for the prize of the Japanese Film Academy in the category "Best Animated Film", but the academicians preferred to award the historical drama "In this corner of the world", telling about the war time Hiroshima

Japanese director-animator Makoto Sinkaya has long been respectfully called the "new Hayao Miyazaki". The director himself does not like this definition, and he is absolutely right. Miyazaki is Miyazaki, and Sinkai is Sinkai. With the same success could be called Christopher Nolan "New Steven Spielberg". Yes, both are very talented, and both are equally respected by viewers and critics. But they are different creators with different approaches to art. As well as Miyazaki and Sinkai.

Makoto Sinkai became famous when, in 2001, he almost single-handedly drew 25-minute fantasy cartoon "The Voice of a distant star". Help friends he only needed to create a sound track

While Miyazaki has been drawing adventure stories all his life for young children, younger adolescents and their parents, Sinkai specializes in sentimental romantic narratives directed at high school students and students. The adventures of the heart and soul are much more interesting to him than the wanderings through the wonderful worlds. In this vein, his new creation "Your Name" is also drawn, which last year became the highest grossing Japanese cartoon in the entire history of the country (the former record belonged to "Spirited Away"Miyazaki). In "Your name" there is mysticism, fantasy and dramatic events, but above all it's a touching tale of the first love on the verge of adulthood.

"Your name" begins as a typical farce about the exchange of bodies ("Oh my God, what's under my shirt ?!"), except with comparatively intelligent jokes. However, further events take a melancholic turn, and then are dispersed almost in a Hollywood spirit. In fact, Sinkai offers three genres in one film. It would seem that the kink, but this picture gives viewers far more than the standard "exchange" comedies that repeat the same jokes in different ways. In this case, the plot of "Your name" is built in such a way that its genre evolution is logical and natural. It reflects the development of the relationship of heroes and their maturation - that is, the willingness to make decisions and act, rather than go with the flow.

Although the tape focuses on the experiences of Taki and Mitsuhi, it affects not only teenage passions. As in "Spirited Away", "Your name" combines Japanese tradition and Japanese modernity - ancient rituals and cell phones, life in the bosom of nature and in the megalopolis, family obedience and rebellion against tradition. Deeply these topics are not explored, but in combination with the basic ideas of the cartoon they make the picture so multifaceted that only a few tapes are able to compete with it. It can be said that Sinkai created the film not only about the souls of teenagers, but also about the soul of Japan. Which has been woven from contradictions since the Japanese adopted Buddhism, but preserved the heathen paganism.

The script "Your name" has many advantages, but the main plus of the tape is its graphics. It's graphics, not animation, since the latter in the film is standard for high-quality anime. Sinkai is a master of stunning, carefully detailed background illustrations, and this talent is revealed in "Your name" like never before. The real Tokyo and the fictional town of Mitsuhi are drawn so enticing that after leaving the cinema I want to escape to the travel agency and book a trip to Japan. When events take a fantastic turn, the picture becomes so beautiful that you begin to cry with delight.

Is it a perfect cartoon? No - when self-critical Sinkai tells in an interview that the picture could be better, if his team had more money and time, he speaks honestly, and does not ask for a compliment. In "Your name" there are really rough edges, which should be corrected. In addition, the tape requires the audience to interest in Japanese culture, as well as patience, because the drive in the film is not Hollywood (even in the final part of the tape). However, the record collection of 355 million dollars the picture did rightfully, and it should pay attention. If you are a little interested in Japanese animation and love passions.

Since 7 September at the cinema.
