Review of the pilot of the series "Colony"

The intriguing start of a fantastic show about the confrontation between collaborators and partisans in the conquered America.

In the not too distant future, the United States has been captured and occupied by newcomers. No one is looking at the eyes, they control the country with the help of automated surveillance systems and numerous collaborators. Personal cars, personal weapons and cell phones are outlawed. Free movement around the country is almost impossible, because America is divided into closed sectors, the exit of which is blocked by high walls and roadblocks. In one such sector is Los Angeles, home to the Bowman family. Before the occupation, Will Bowman (Josh Holloway) was a successful FBI agent, now he works as an auto mechanic and hides his past from the new authorities. When collaborators catch him while trying to illegally cross the city's border, Will is denounced, and Governor Snyder (Peter Jacobson) invites him to return to his former work and to identify the members of the Resistance that organize terrorist acts in the sector. Reluctantly agreeing, Will does not even suspect that he will have to hunt among his own wife Katie (among others)Sarah Wayne Callis), a trusted member of the Resistance.

The plot of the Colonies is inspired by the life of Paris during the Nazi occupation during World War II

Talking about alien invasions to the Earth, fantastic films and serials usually concentrate on confrontation of people and newcomers, whether it be open fighting or partisan operations. New show co-author of the cult series "Stay alive» Carlton Chuse is arranged differently. The aliens are not shown on the screen either in the pilot series, nor, as far as we know from the hints of the creators of the show, in subsequent episodes of the first season.

The pilot series "Colonies" was staged by the Argentine director Juan Jose Campanella, the winner of the Oscar for the film 2009 "The Mystery in His Eyes"

Instead, the main focus in the "Colony" is made in the war between collaborators and members of the Resistance. At the same time, the former are not portrayed as the heifers of hell, but the latter are ideal heroes. When, for example, in the "pilot" Will notices that the terrorist attack, in which he himself nearly suffered, led to the death of several innocent people and hardly touched the collaborators, it is difficult to disagree with him. Resistance leads a righteous struggle by unrighteous methods, and collaborators do not always act like insensitive chain dogs of the alien regime. The same governor, Snyder, is more likely to be a charming opportunist than a classic American totalitarian villain like Darth Vader. Although it is clear that if necessary, he can be arbitrarily cruel - just to keep his "trump" place at the head of the city and not get into the sinister and mysterious Factory, where, according to the characters, they send all the seriously guilty townspeople.

Another topic of the series is the social inequality of Americans, aggravated by the invasion. While people like Snyder live in chic mansions and arrange lush receptions, the families of urban hard workers survive like the inhabitants of the USSR in difficult years. Because of the aliens, the widely available benefits of civilization such as insulin have become a rarity, and they must be stolen, received by acquaintance or exchanged in illegal "black markets", risking a poor quality, life-threatening product. Although the aliens did not take their homes and gardens from ordinary Los Angeles residents, the contrast between Snyder's life and the life of the Bowman in the "pilot" is still striking and even shocking.

Since the "pilot" spends almost all the screen time on describing the state of affairs in the city and presenting key characters, it is difficult to say on how exciting the next series will be, where Will and Cathy and their accomplices / associates will play each other in "cat and mouse" ". However, this intriguing show clearly has great potential - primarily as a psychological thriller, exploring the souls of collaborators and partisans on politically neutral fantastic material, where on both sides - Americans to the bone. In addition, once at the helm of Cuse, we are almost certainly waiting for unexpected plot surprises.

As for the actors of the show, in the "pilot" the most interesting are Peter Jacobson (Dr. Taub from "Doctor Haus") And Sarah Wayne Callis (Laurie Grimes of"Walking Dead"). On the contrary, Josh Holloway, shining in the role of Sawyer in "Lost", noticeably faded, as the "Colony" uses him as a straightforward positive hero, and not as a sarcastic anti-hero. It's unlikely that Will will change dramatically in the future, but maybe Holloway will find a way to reveal himself in this image. Otherwise, the series may suffer significantly due to the fact that the secondary characters will pull the blanket of the protagonist.

It's also worth noting that Will's sister is playing Amanda Rigetti from "Mentalist", And the leader of the Resistance of Quayle - Paul Gilfoyle from "CSI: Crime Scene". They are bright TV stars, but the pilot hardly uses them, and therefore it is difficult to say, they will only be "lit" in their new show. In any case, they are better with them than without them.
