Review of the film "Gravitation"

One of the most beautiful and inexplicably executed films in the history of cinema does not claim philosophical depths, but fascinates and revives the immediate childish admiration of the cosmos

The crew of the shuttle "Explorer" is engaged in the orbit by setting up the Hubble telescope and simultaneously conducts other experiments in space. A sudden catastrophe - a collision with a cloud of space debris - turns a technical mission into a struggle for survival. Two astronauts in the hitch turn out to be all alone without connection to the Earth and hopes of salvation. Oxygen and fuel are running out, and the only way to get home alive is about to disappear if the lander descends in the upper atmosphere.

By and large, "Gravitation" is a simple film. Stories about people who have fallen into a hopeless situation, who are looking for the possibility of salvation and who are clinging desperately to life, a dime a dozen. They differ only in the place of action, the number of heroes and the presence or absence of happy end. Yes, and the "gravity" in the title is the main binding force of the film, Alfonso Cuaron too, everything is quite simple.

The result of the work on the film was several inventions: a special 12-belt design for simulating free flight, a light cube that allows recreating natural light, and even a virtual space station

In the understanding of the director Alfonso Cuaron and his son, the screenwriter Jonas Couaron, the world is dual, and this is demonstrated in the picture with deliberate diligence. And this duality is how tightly connects the two poles, and discards from each other. The serene silence and beauty of the cosmos is here confronted with the inevitable danger of astronauts. A man's calculating view of circumstances is contrasted with female emotionality, quick temper and dreaminess. Even death, constantly looming somewhere in sight, is facing a new life - the heroine Bullock then she remembers her own child, then herself depicts an embryo in weightlessness, then suddenly he hears through the interference of radio signals the children's crying of a newborn. And all this is boldly exposed by the Couaron to the front window. Looking for a reason for in-depth analysis - yes, they are all, the depths, in the palm of your hand.

If the film consisted only in these simple duels of the two sides of the same medal, then it would not be worth talking about it for a long time, but this picture is strong first of all with the visual series. What did Couaron, the operator Emmanuelle Lubeckie and the actors on the screen simply do not lend themselves to any verbal description. This is a real attraction of unprecedented beauty.

The Russian space suit for Bullock is “real”, made of fabric and plastic, but the American space suits had to be drawn on a computer

Rare things are almost impossible to describe in words - music, architecture, some layers of art. To all this there are definitions and stamps, as well as to the word “flight”. It is easy to understand its meaning, but it is difficult to describe it in words. When the film envelops you from the very beginning of the 17-minute flight scene in space without a single assembly glue - this is not just aerobatics. This is some kind of unimaginable level of fantasy and skill demonstrated by the filmmakers. If the majority of even the most sophisticated special effects in cinema can at least be imagined as being done, then with “Gravity” you just have to look with your mouth open, without having the slightest idea how this can be done in the studio, and not in outer space. If you are told about the cables and lines on which the actors allegedly fly, or computer models generated by animators, take a closer look, you will not find the slightest flaw, and only dive deeper into the depths of misunderstanding the principles of implementation of such surveys. Of course, there will be specialists pointing out the gaps in physics or the construction of spacecraft, but for the viewer, the whole acquaintance with the space of which is limited to movies and books, the best attraction with the effect of total immersion cannot be found. Space - right here, on the big screens of multiplexes.

But do not be afraid of such an extensive description of the beauty of special effects, in the film there was a place and excellent acting work. Sandra Bullock almost the entire film had to be held alone, and this one-man theater was a success to her as much as one would expect from a Hollywood actress. It keeps the attention of the audience no worse than magnificent cosmic views or large-scale space collisions. At the same time, a separate portion of applause deserves dubbing - the film plays with semitones of intonations in conversations, monologues, or even just a heartbeat and breathing - the Russian localization here is beyond praise.

If one of the films of recent years is worth saying the phrase “It’s better to see once than hear a hundred times,” then Gravity should be first on this list. Cosmos has always put the highest demands on creators, be they designers, artists or writers, and overcoming this gravity has always produced amazing results. Cuarón pulled the earth and earthly to the delight of the audience.
