Review of the film "The Greatest Showman"

Mystification on hoaxes - a film about a great scammer by the authors turned into a Disney fairy-tale musical with charming noble heroes and beautiful princesses.

Since childhood, the young Phineas Taylor Barnum realized that he has an amazing talent to entice people with his insane ideas, bright dreams and unusual aspirations. In search of money, he tried a lot of enterprises, but stopped at one - on the grounds of the abandoned New York museum Barnum built a circus, which named his name. Under the dome of the magical tent, Phineas called acrobats and strongmen, fatties and albinos, a bearded woman and Siamese twins, revealing the window to the world to people who had previously been shunned. However, the pursuit of fame and success almost ends in the worst ambitious entrepreneur - at some point Barnum forgot about who supported him in difficult times and for whom he built his circus empire.

The real circus of Barnum lasted until the middle of 2017 and was closed due to a catastrophic decline in the attendance and protests of animal rights activists

It is naive to believe that embellishment of real facts, and even frank invention in films based on real events, is an exclusively domestic invention. Our glamorous Vikings, throwing basketball players or legendary 28 panfilov players on top of the Olympic Games, against the backdrop of the fact that Hollywood was blinded by Phineas Taylor Barnum, one of the main fraudsters of the 19th century, the man who laid the foundation for that colorful but thoroughly false skyscraper of show business, which we have the happiness to observe to this day. Picture Michael Gracie "The greatest showman" with Hugh Jackman in the main role does not have any relation to the real Barnum, except for random coincidences - that is the main hoax of the film.

However, before criticizing the movie for being unreliable, let's note the positive aspects. Of course, Jackman, dancing and singing in a tall cylinder, is unusually good, especially if you keep in mind the last year's "Logan", Where the actor skillfully portrayed the ruins - in" Showman "Hugh seemed to have dropped a decade and again surprises with his fervor and charisma. Magnificent in the movie are musical numbers. Yes, you need to be prepared for the fact that this is a musical, where the songs are translated by subtitles, but it does not deliver huge problems - the texts are accessible to any schoolboy, so there is time and to understand the meaning, and to watch spectacular choreography. Finally, at the very least, but the writers were able to make from the highly questionable biography of Barnum a fairy tale story about a dream, love, freedom and equality. Given the recent grandiose deal, we can safely say that Fox in this case gave a normal such screen Disney.

Moreover, from the not-so-sweet story of the "showman" scams, the authors and actors were able to lay down an instructive, though Hollywood straightforward and naive fairy tale. The protagonist collects under the roof of his circus freaks and freaks of all varieties and convinces them that each of them is beautiful in its own way, and its strange artists really open up, bring to the owner a fabulous profit, and then accept into cordial embraces after Barnum suddenly lights up with the idea of impressing America's supreme light with the tours of a European opera diva. In passing, the viewer also tells a beautiful love story - Phineas takes care of Cherity since childhood, makes her initial savings for her, and then puts all her incomes in the home and two charming daughters, one of whom wants to become a ballerina. Well, just a role model!

But now it is worth turning to official sources and to see who Phineas Barnum really was. ABOUT! This character was worthy of a completely different film and certainly did not deserve to be played through a positive Jackman. Barnum lived by lies, fraud and deceit, knocking money out of its viewers, partners and creditors in any available ways. In the film, a couple of "frauds" are mentioned in passing, for example, obtaining a loan for a non-existent pledge and falsification of these circus performers, but these are flowers compared to what the real "showman" did - he did not think it was shameful to give out 80-old woman for 160- year-old nurse of Washington, sell the potion from which the Negroes turn into white, demonstrate in their circus a huge tuna with a sewn monkey's head, convincing viewers that they see a mermaid.

Despite the long preparation for the role and efforts of Rebecca Fergusson, who played singer Jenny Lind, the actress had to re-sound - her singing did not sound like the voice of the greatest diva of her time. In the film, viewers hear the voice of singer Lauren Olred.

For this person there were no borders, there was no morality or obligations, he repeatedly deceived partners, circled the state and frankly profited from his artists. And he did it not for the sake of his beloved wife and daughters - the real Barnum was married twice, and he had four children. So the touching story with the singer's kiss in the film is also a trick of the viewer. The tape in general tells about some other character, tells enthusiasm and even convincingly, but you need to clearly understand that the reality of "The Greatest Showman" has nothing to do.

"Every minute a loch is born" - this rather crude phrase is attributed to Barnum. "The greatest showman" cleverly used the human ignorance, naivety and curiosity, he easily went to forgery and supported the dirtiest interests of the public. To some extent, "Lohs" can now be considered all of us. We bought into colorful posters and a vigorous trailer, but the film was not at all the one that should have been removed about Phineas Barnum. And after 140 years after his death, this rascal continues to devastate the pockets of the hunters to the lush show of the audience.

Since 4 January at the cinema.
